Welcome back to a wonderful fall semester. I hope
each of you had a fantastic summer.
In our Mission Statement, there are three basic
tenets for our existence as a Sisterhood. They
influence every facet of our lives. One of the tenets is, “Promotes a perpetual bond of friendship.” This bond among sisters can be broken with a word or deed. Tri Sigma has a strong policy against hazing. The policy is found in the National Insurance and Risk Management Program, a copy of which is on the Risk Management Page of the Members Only section of the Web site at www.sigmasigmasigma.org.
As an organization, we are proud to be a Premier Level sponsor of HazingPrevention.org, which sponsors National Hazing Prevention Week and runs September 22-24, 2008. The purpose of National Hazing Prevention Week is to promote local campus and community awareness of the dangers of hazing. I hope that your chapter will be an active participant during this week.
Working with HazingPrevention.org, the “National Hazing Prevention Week Resource Guide” was developed as a resource for chapters to obtain current educational information about the dangers of hazing and how to prevent hazing. The resource guide is being mailed to each collegiate chapter for your use in educating your chapter and promoting an anti-hazing culture on campus.
In addition, Tri Sigma is a sponsor of the Anti-Hazing Hotline, an anonymous hotline that anyone can use to report hazing. It is a toll-free number. We encourage all sisters to call (888) NOT-HAZE or (888) 668-4293 if you have any concerns about hazing in your chapter.
Have a great semester!

The death of a student is the worst nightmare of any student affairs professional. Allison Swick-Duttine and the other administrators at The State University of New York College at Plattsburgh lived through this terrible experience, and they hope that by sharing their story that others can avoid the pain of a similar tragedy.
They will be presenting a webinar during National Hazing Prevention Week 2008:
A Hazing Death: Five Years Later and 10 Lessons Learned
Tuesday, Sept. 23
2 p.m. EST
75 Minutes
$50
Presenters:
Allison Swick-Duttine, Director of Fraternity/Sorority Life
Steve Matthews, Dean of Students
Jerry Lottie, Assistant Chief of University Police
The discussion will center on the procedures in place before the death of Dean Jennings, and the lessons learned about investigations, sanctioning and educational efforts. In addition, the panel will share how they were able to change the hazing culture on the campus through effective partnerships and prevention efforts. While this tragedy and many others have happened in the fraternity/sorority community, such dangerous hazing practices also take place in many other types of organizations. Effective prevention and intervention efforts must be campus-wide to have the greatest impact. We encourage you to invite colleagues from other departments to participate in this webinar and to view it as a catalyst for making changes on campus before problems escalate.
Participation in the webinar is based upon location, not individual. If you have the technology to broadcast the program to a larger audience from one location, please do so. If it is easier to have small groups of people gathered around computers/speaker phones in many different parts of campus, that's fine too. We want as many administrators as possible to benefit from this program. If you have any questions about the program or how it will work, please contact 303-325-7831 or maxwell@hazingprevention.org.

Sincerely,
Tracy Maxwell

Sigma Sigma Sigma is excited to fully implement the Collegiate Officer Training Program (OTP). All collegiate chapters will be required, as a part of Accreditation, to implement the Officer Training Program following officer elections in November. The Alumnae Advisory Boards (AAB) will be responsible for facilitating the program for their chapter.
To assist the AAB with the implementation of the program, we will be offering a “Train the Trainer” Conference Call. The conference call will be held Thursday, September 25th at 8:00pm EST/7pm CST. Click here to register now! |

Ever wonder where those badges are?
Curious why
you haven’t received those Arc Sequence Workbooks yet? What about thatroster…where are our NEW MEMBERS?
If you have ever asked
those questions, help is here! Often the reason for these delays is due to paperwork processing and
a missing item or two. So we’ll be posting a weekly resource for you to see if
you have items to be resolved at National
Headquarters.
What: Link to the “pending notification list” updated each Friday.
Where: Collegiate forms page
How to read: If there is an X beside your chapter name, then there is something to be resolved.
NM = New Member Paperwork
INT = Initiation Paperwork
$ = money of some sort (NM fees, badges, fall billing, etc.)
How to resolve:
1. Select ONE person to contact National Headquarters to determinewhat needs to be resolved. Talk amongst your AAB and Officer Team to determine who will check this on a regular basis and notify others on what needs to be resolved.
2. Work within your chapter officers and AAB team to submit the necessary items.
3. Check back on the Pending Notification List to see if the “X” has been removed; if so, you’re good to go.
National Headquarter's job:
• Keep the pending notification list updated at least once a week to reflect items which have been received
• To help you understand the specifics of what needs to be submitted to resolve the pending items
Your job:
• Review the spreadsheet often to
makesure there is nothing pending
• Resolve necessary items in a timely manner
Everyone’s job:
• Be kind and respectful when
trying to resolve items even if we
are frustrated
• Understand that mistakes happen – then fix them not place blame
We hope this helps with the communication of pending items and ensure your badges and Arc Sequence Workbooks are on time and that rosters and billings are accurate! If you have questions or feedback on the process, please email sigma@trisigma.org.

Yes, it is a new year and recruitment is more important than ever! Workshops, chanting, conversations, important decisions, and putting recruitment in the forefront of your everyday normal activities is critical! This summer, Tri Sigma offered one advisor from each chapter the opportunity to attend a weekend recruitment training session. Those that were not able to attend were invited to a webinar training! This information will also be posted as a recording for others to benefit from. Bottom line – we need your help in recruiting.
It is not just about the numbers – it is about making sure Tri Sigma continues to grow and develop.
Each chapter has membership goals to achieve for Accreditation and for the chapter’s health. Each chapter has a designated National Volunteer focusing on their recruitment efforts. If you don’t know who your contact is OR what your membership recruitment goal is, email your Collegiate Coordinator or Regional Director and find out!
We’re here to help, support, train, and encourage! To make sure your membership numbers are recorded accurately at National Headquarters...
1. Call NHQ – When you recruit women through COR or a more formal structure, let us know! Call and talk with Margaret Fields to let her know quota, total, and the # who accepted your invitations for membership.
2. Submit your P109 report ASAP. Remember, there is a Part I and a Part II to the report. Both need to be submitted in order for your new members to be processed and Arc Sequence Workbooks to be distributed. Your Chapter Treasurer has access to this report behind Members Only.
3. Check your roster – if your new members have been added, then we know you’ve recruited.
4. Communicate with your recruitment support contact to make sure the women you’ve recruited are showing up on the National statistics each week.
Good luck and we look forward to hearing your success stories! Enjoy finding your new sisters and helping our organization grow!
