WORCESTER (508) 753 - 9543
THURS. APRIL 4TH 9:30 DOOR
21+
For Immediate Release On Thursday April 4th, Ralph's Chadwick Square Diner begins its New Music Series, featuring some of the finest artist's throughout the country. Many of these Thursday nights will mark the Worcester debut of many independent label artists or their return to Worcester after a long abscence. I would list the highlights, but every Thursday night at Ralph's in April is going to be a highlight.
This show promises to have everything that a Thursday night at Ralph's should; the return of a band with a style and attitude so insane that they have Worcester stamped all over them (even though their from Northampton and Bawston), a new band on the Worcester scene, and the return of some old crazy friends. The uniting themes for the evenings entertainment would have to be humor and parody. Featured on the show is Northampton, MA, Chunk Records recording artists, The UnBand. The UnBand are making their return to Worcester after a three and a half year abscence. They last played in October of 1992 at the old Harlow Street WAG. Since that time, they have released an Lp/CD, 'Wang Chung Lo Mein' on Chunk Records and were on the first 'Hotel Massachusetts' compilation. Shortly thereafter, they brought their maniacal, mayhem tour up and down both the east and west coast. By mid 1993 they decided that Richmond, Virginia was the place to be and spent most of the next year there. After another tour, they found themselves playing up and down California (in this sort of endless loop that it took a year to get out of). By the end of 1995 they were back safely in the Happy Valley, settling in Northampton. This winter they have recorded another albums worth of material and in March they are on a southeast/midwest tour to promote it. Their music has never been easily classifiable. Musically they've been known to jump from Ramones style power pop, to overblown AC/DC, Alice Cooper riff rock, to chaotic speed punk. Lead singer un-Matt Pierce's lyrics reflect the paradox, apathy, and overall silliness of life. The one constant of their songs and live performances is the reckless enthusiasm that the UnBand displays. Lead singer un-Matt Pierce sings with such a psychotic fervor that it looks like his eyes are about to popout of his head. Bassist Mike Ruffino has an athletic playing style that makes him look like he may stumble any minute and bring the whole stage show down with him. Dreadlocked drummer Eugene plays with such a hyper athletic fervor that you would think that he was going to (you guessed it) explode.
Also on the show will be a new Worcester phenomenom known as the Dirt Bombs. Allthough the band only has a few local shows under their belt, two of its members, Will Burdette and Harvey have been active participants in the subversive side of the Worcester alternative scene. Musically The Dirt Bombs combine the bombast of such 80s bands as Flipper with Descendant/Misfit speed punk rock. Lyrically, they are completely tongue and cheek and refuse to take anything seriously.
The evening begins or perhaps ends (we haven't figured out the order quite yet) with the debut of Super Greg and Waterpark's new college band, named HEAD ON U. HEAD ON U. began training for this debut back in 1994. Shortly after the tragic demise of Super Greg and Waterpark, a savvy talent scout signed three of the bands members to full scholarships, based on their quick wit, reaction times, and unmatched prowess in ping pong. HEAD ON U. currently features former SG+Wp bassist/drummer Rob 'MC Slippy' Parker, former SG+Wp drummer/bassist Martin 'Dumpstah Mahty' , and of course former SG+Wp guitarist extrodinaire John 'SuperGreg' Shipman. Allthough it is unclear whether the debut of the HEAD ON U. Marching Band and Atttack Team will feature highly dangerous acrobaticsor cheese whiz, it will most certainly feature music being made by guitars, basses, and keyboards. However the act will most likely not feature actual ping-pong playing as it is against NCAA regulations for a team to play even exhibition ping-pong outside of the NCAA sanctioned season.
Like I said... More good stuff to come, lots of tapes too. Also, The UnBand's press folks will be sending you their write ups, new tape, and a picture of the three of them looking real goofy (I wouldn't expect thatthey have one of them looking serious).
